Bella Umbria

Norcia

About

The town's known history begins with a settlement by the Sabines in the 5th century BC. It became an ally of ancient Rome in 205 BC. There are ancient ruins dating back to the first century. It’s a small commune within the province of Perugia and is located in the South East corner of Umbria. It is situated beautifully within the sub range of the Apennine mountains.

Norcia is known for the hunting of wild boar, pork, sausage and truffles. The term norcineria comes from the Norcia.

Norcia is probably one of our favorite towns in all of Italy because of the scenic beauty, the food and charm. We have been going for years, but in 2016 we were not able to make it. On our last visit, the town was bustling with joyful families and townspeople of all ages mingling in the streets. In October 2016, the beautiful town was hit with a terrible earthquake which destroyed the church of St. Benedict along with many shops, hotels, restaurants and homes. We returned this year and it was surreal. Dumpsters filled with rubble lined the streets. Shops opened for business next to shops closed because the inside is destroyed. As we peeked in the windows of a restaurant we had once enjoyed, it was sad to see broken wine bottles never attended to because it was now a condemned building. We wanted to support the townspeople and we want to encourage others to do so until it gets back to its glorious past.
